Our Services
Consultations
Our consultations run by appointments, Monday to Fridays during the morning, afternoon and evening and on Saturday mornings. Appointments are usually scheduled for 15 minutes, but longer consultation times are available if you require more time with the vet.
Dentistry
Like us, pets need to constantly remove plaque that accumulates after eating, in order to avoid gingivitis and tartar build up that leads to periodontal infections and tooth loss. Our staff can assist in determining the best way for this to be achieved in your pet. We value your pet’s dental health, knowing that the health of their mouth is a reflection of their general health, not to mention the sweetness of their breath! Dental checks are included in routine exams and can be performed at other times if you have specific concerns. We examine your pet's mouth for signs of tartar, gingivitis, fractured teeth, lumps or infection. Our dental equipment includes state of the art ultrasonic cleaning and polishing equipment.
Radiography
At Hawthorn Veterinary Clinic, we are equipped with an excellent digital x-ray machine, which provides us with excellent image quality in a short time, minimizing the time patients need to be sedated. The high quality digital images are stored with your patient's record and are available for electronic sharing with specialists if this is required.

Hospitalisation
Pets that need to stay with us are kept comfortable with padded bedding, hygenic stainless steel cages, and heat pads if required. Our hospital is air conditioned. An isolation ward is utilized for contagious patients. All patients receive ongoing attention and video monitoring is employed for overnight hospital patients. Fluid pumps are utilised to ensure accurate fluid dosages on all patients.
Vaccinations
Routine vaccinations are available at the clinic. A health check is performed on all pets prior to vaccination. Vaccine requirements are tailored to each pet and Trevor or Sharon will determine which vaccine is appropriate for your pet, after a discussion with you and assessment of your pet's lifestyle factors. Typically for dogs it may include distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and canine cough. For cats, it will likely include feline enteritis, feline upper respiratory disease (‘flu) and possibly feline immunodeficiency virus. Extended duration of immunity vaccines are available for some diseases.
Kitten Adoption
In partnership with local welfare groups, from time to time, we provide veterinary care for abandoned cats and kittens requiring homes. These kittens are given health checks, wormed, defleaed, desexed, vaccinated and offered for adoption to caring homes. It is wonderfully satisfying to see these kitties brought back by loving owners as they grow, knowing they have been saved from a life on the streets, or worse!
Surgery
Routine surgeries are performed at the clinic, every weekday. Your pets are in safe hands, both Trevor and Sharon each have over 20 years each of surgical experience. All animals receive a pre-anaesthetic evaluation prior to their anaesthetic. They receive careful, constant monitoring whilst under anaesthesia and during their recovery. Our equipment is modern and well maintained. We utilise an electrosurgical unit and a cryotherapy units in selected cases. We place a high emphasis on pain prevention. Pain relief is administered preoperatively and all patients receiving ongoing monitoring to ensure they remain comfortable during their stay with us and in the postoperative period at home. Admissions for routine surgeries take place between 8 and 10am. For their safety, we request that you fast your pet from 10pm the night before their surgery.
Microchipping
Microchips are invaluable as a tool for rehoming lost pets. All lost pets are scanned for a microchip and using national databases, their owner's contact details can be found, allowing them to be quickly reunited with their owner. We are an authorised microchip implanter, with both implanting and scanning abilities. The procedure is quick and simple, and for the majority of pets, pain free. Microchips can also be used to permit entry via cat flaps, preventing the local stray entering your house. Microchipping is now mandatory for all pets sold in Victoria and councils request microchip numbers when pets are registered.
